Strong Austenitic Stainless Steel Screws drill into hardwood without causing cracks

Strong Austenitic Stainless Steel Screws Drill into Hardwood without Breakage in Testing

This R&D testing report compares Taiwan Shan Yin stainless steel screws with standard austenitic stainless steel screws when drilling into hardwood. The test focuses on breaking torque, hard wood penetration, screw breakage, embedding performance, and removal condition after installation.

Austenitic stainless steel is commonly used for corrosion resistance, but it is generally difficult to harden by conventional heat treatment. For hardwood fastening applications, screw strength, drilling torque, shank stability, and thread design are important factors that may affect installation performance.

Screw Performance Comparison Test

  • Screw name: A2 Flat Head Decking Screw with Type 17
  • TSY: Taiwan Shan Yin stainless steel screw
  • AN: Competitor standard austenitic stainless steel screw
  • Test material: Germany hardwood, oak wood

Breaking Torque Test

The breaking torque test compares the torque strength of Taiwan Shan Yin stainless steel screws and competitor standard austenitic stainless steel screws. According to the original test data, the TSY screw samples showed higher breaking torque values than the competitor samples.

Sample No.1 No.2 No.3 No.4 No.5 No.6 No.7 No.8 No.9 No.10
TSY 60 62 62 60 61 59 60 62 60 60
Competitor 32 30 35 32 30 32 31 29 30 32

The original test report indicates that TSY stainless steel screws showed approximately 80% higher torque than the competitor samples in this comparison test.

Hardwood Penetration Test

The hard wood penetration test was conducted on Germany hardwood, oak wood, using two pieces of wood. The test compared screw performance at different drilling stages, including drilling up to half of the thread length, drilling up to the whole threading length, drilling up to the shank part, drilling the whole screw into wood, and screw removal.

  • Drilling up to 1/2 of thread length: both TSY and competitor samples passed.
  • Drilling up to whole threading length: both TSY and competitor samples passed.
  • Drilling up to shank part: TSY sample remained OK, while the competitor sample broke.
  • Drilling the whole screw into wood: TSY showed better embedding performance in the demonstrated test.
  • Screw removal: TSY screw was removed without visible breakage, while the competitor sample showed shank breakage during the drilling process.

Testing Conclusion

Based on the demonstrated test results, Taiwan Shan Yin stainless steel screws with special processing showed stronger breaking torque and better hardwood drilling performance than the competitor standard austenitic stainless steel screw samples.

The test report also shows that TSY stainless steel screws can drill into hardwood without pre-drilling in the demonstrated testing condition, while the competitor sample showed breakage during the drilling process. This supports the use of TSY stainless steel screws for hardwood, decking, timber, and construction fastening applications where screw strength and installation reliability are important.

This R&D testing report demonstrates Taiwan Shan Yin's product testing capability for stainless steel screws, decking screws, wood screws, and construction fasteners. Through breaking torque testing and hardwood penetration comparison, buyers can better evaluate screw performance, material strength, and application suitability before selecting fastening solutions.
